English Poems

A Fairy Song :

Over hill, over dale,

Thorough bush, thorough brier,

Over park, over pale,

Thorough flood, thorough fire!

I do wander everywhere,

Swifter than the moon's sphere;

And I serve the Fairy Queen,

To dew her orbs upon the green;

The cowslips tall her pensioners be;

In their gold coats spots you see;

Those be rubies, fairy favours;

In those freckles live their savours;

I must go seek some dewdrops here,

And hang a pearl in every cowslip's ear.
A Friend From Above :

I prayed for you before we met…

Not knowing what you’d be,

I asked the Lord to send a friend.

One chosen just for me…

I asked that they’d be Godly

With wisdom of his ways.

A friend to help and guide me

In the troubles of these days…

So often in life, we need someone

To listen while we talk.

Someone who will not condemn or judge

But encourage us as we walk.

The narrow road we choose to follow

May sometimes make us stumble.

But to have a friend to catch our fall

Teaches us to be humble.

When I asked The Lord to send a friend

Though many came and went…

He gave much more than I asked

For you are the friend HE sent.

 Into the Woodland
I wonder further in the wood
then pause to take in all I could,
and there beneath its canopy
I'm caught up in all its beauty.
The colours start in palest green
a vibrant living leafy screen,
and spreading out in waves of pink
the Willow Herb and nettles link.
Insects buzz in whispered words,
the broad old Oak is full of birds
where Great Tits dare an early call,
beneath Jays dig within the sprawl.
Beyond a line of Foxglove towers
rise above a glade of flowers
and light, a shaft between the trees
guides me on with quiet ease.

The Marsh
The clouds are placed in such a way
that seems to cast some heightened logic
on the foray of the flats and clay,
picking out the green from beige.
The moist brown ink and tainted gold,
is straw becoming copper, weaving
slanting yellows, burnished and bold,
turning their flower heads skyward.
A wood plank cabin, drifting on this sea,
warden of thistles, sailing grassy waves,
brings forth from within a twisted old tree,
pushing up from the shadows beneath.
Over to the east a strip of melting blue
calls the pillions to a duel, pulling cables
drawing lines, thrice bisecting the view,
resisting the urge to whip free.
The grasses beckon, giddy, for beyond
the factory’s spires are morbidly cold,
their flavour is on the wind and its bonded
the smell of nature and industry.

The Great Summer Blue
I have been waiting for this moment
and now I'm beneath it,
looking up to it, spell bound.
Above is the great blue,
the first great summer blue
of the year,
and it pulls me,
surrounds me,
fills me with warmth.
The clouds have disappeared,
all is clear above and
beyond the great blue grows.

The warm rays of summer
spread out in the blue,
stretch and welcome us
and we are beneath it,
knowing with pleasure that
it's going to be sunny all day.
The Ant and Me
I opened up my palm to see an ant
waving all his arms in such a rant.
Bending close, to my surprise, I heard a voice,
it seemed this little ant he had no choice.
I don't know why I left the path and then
my giant feet had trampled on his den.
The little ant explained they'd built a nest
but now a crumpled mess he must protest.
Deep down I knew my feet had done me wrong
when walking where I just did not belong
if only I had stayed upon the path
this ant might be at home sat in the bath.
I felt so sorry for this little chap
I took him home and sat him on my lap
then once asleep I placed him on my bed
and even let him cuddle up to ted,
I knew right then the ant and me were friends
I hoped a life with me might make amends.

The Roaring Lion Came
The noise was deeper than a tribal drum,
but constant and ancient.
It rumbled out a fearful warning
and it came across the orange land,
its maker hidden in the swaying grass.
"Run, run the lions here!" A voice called out.
Then the silence of a hunter as it ran,
paws pressing down the sand,
and up upon a rocky outcrop
high above the rolling plains appeared
a noble king his mane a crown of furry gold.
All the men and woman stopped and stared.
He raised his head, pushed out his chest
and roared into the sun, the
sound a terrifying scream
of fangs and quakes and
as it grew the earth began to shake.
King Looks On
He watched from his shade
lionesses gathering for a hunting raid.
Already he had told them of his hunger
roared and scared them with his anger.
Those sandy cats were trained to kill
hunting pray to have their fill.
A pride of lions, deadly sleek,
driving fear into the brave and to the weak.
The king he watched them fade from sight
then closed his eyes to shield them from the light.
Red Elephants
by Lisa Oyanna

We came upon the scene
where the land dipped down
to form a bowl of red sand,
surrounded by the course bush,
and here a group of elephants played.

Sat in our jeep we peered into
the mass of crimson bodies.
Their trunks were swaying thick ropes,
their ears flapping clouds of pink,
hot spices pluming in the air,
their though hides red and creased,
staining tribal desert paint,
their huge bodies rocking as they played.

We watched them play to trumpet calls,
and mixed up within the tree legs,
flat feet stamping down the plumes,
their children moved amongst their knees
while sails thrashed up above the waves,
broad barrels bobbing in a red sea.

Wild Orange
I walked along the path and there
a flash of eyes, a golden pair,
the pupils slit and feline shy
the creature looked me in the eye.
His colour was an orange shock
a furry, puffed up, fancy frock,
with streaks and lines of creamy hair
he did not break his intense stare.
Frozen bodies, eyes still locked
he seemed no longer to be shocked,
instead now sure I posed no threat
I saw this cat was no one's pet.
There was no collar on his neck,
a wild hunter on a trek,
distracted by some human man,
then off into the grass he ran.
Misty Cat
Sometimes she's invisible, perhaps a
movement or the padding of feet,
maybe a blur of black on white.
She's a ghost upon the floorboards,
who scurries out of sight, a pulse,
the throbbing of her breathing
a rhythm of the house.

She is that apparition until
she knows it's time for feeding,
then she's there around your feet,
almost making you trip or
sitting in your path, on the
kitchen floor, staring, unflinching
eyes wide and knowing, waiting

Sheep Dog
A movement in the grass,
black and white streaks,
low and then up, sprinting
and coming round to steer the
sheep, their feet pounding the
field, as he is silent, abrupt, quick,
nose level, creeping then
running again.
In the back ground a man
calls, his voice a sharp
command and then a whistle.
The dog halts and waits,
the wind has gone, the air still,
the high pitch call follows and
once again he is off, turning quickly
pulling in his quarry,  guiding
his sheep through the gate.

Silver School
Emerald blue and turquoise green
a shimmering surface, silver screen
broken by the sun's bright glare
the fish beneath are unaware.
Their bodies lined with shinning scales
their fins are underwater sails,
they twist between the golden beams,
on unseen currents and hidden streams
and form a school that twists and glides,
a shape with many moving sides,
a thousand silver darts as one
lit up beneath the sea and sun.

Ants and Spiders
Behind the bush upon the mound
ants are moving with no sound.
Leaves are passed along the chain,
ants as one, a single brain.
Strands of silver make a net,
unseen web, a silent threat.
Fly is caught it's far too late
spider comes to seal his fate.
Ants march on to feed the queen
deep below she is unseen.
Workers feed the silent drones
in their capsule breeding zones.
Spider shoots its web to reach
across the ever widening breach.
Swinging on a single thread
beyond the gap the web is spread.

Back to School Kit
Pencils, sharpeners, rubbers, pens,
at last a chance to see your friends.
Highlighters, folders, books, glue,
make sure your ink is black and not blue.
Notepad, scissors, markers, ring binders,
and you’ve clipped in your colour dividers.
Protractor, tape, setsquare, pencil case,
check it to see that all is in place.
Files, calculator, ruler, gym shoes
and that’s the whole kit all ready to use.

Great Explorers at School
by Rex Miller
The teacher stood with pen in hand
"What year did Armstrong's spaceship land?
When did Columbus sail the seas
to put his precious Queen at ease?
And how about intrepid Scott?
I need some answers now you lot!"
I see this means that you have failed
to find where Captain Cook once sailed”
and no one knows of Francis Drake?”
The students watched the teacher shake
“I set this homework late last week
and here you are...will no one speak?”
Then one by one the students rose
the teacher raised her arms and froze.
The students spoke, their voices one
“Yes miss, the homework has been done.
In Nineteen sixty nine, in mid July
Armstrong’s rocket streaked the sky,
and during fourteen ninety two
Columbus found great lands anew.
Then Captain Cook was big down under
with so much land it’s little wonder,
and Drake, well miss, for goodness sake
he sailed the globe without a break.”
The teacher fell back in her chair,
which tumbled down, feet in the air.
She jumped back up and screamed out loud
“My class you’ve made me very proud!”

The need is always there
For someone sweet and fair
Thankfully for me
That's my mummy
Who I love without compare.
2)
When I need a helping hand
and just can't understand
one person springs to mind
my mother sweet and kind.
3)
I want to say
I love you mum
and when I'm glum
I know you'll make
me feel it's no big deal.
4)
I cannot think of any one
more giving than my mum
you have my love forever.

Koi  Poem
I’m looking down into the darkness
the pond, a pool of circular blackness.
There seems no life, no light, no spark
but something moves there in the dark.
It rolls its wings of pearly white
and rises slowly into sight,
it curves and forms like pluming smoke
as if some wizard might invoke.
An orange streak curves down its back
a dragons mark, a fiery track.
It takes a breath in one smooth flow,
then disappears back down below.

Collecting Water
When the summer comes
we hide on down
in the midday heat and
watch the land shrink
as the devils rise to play and blur
the horizon. But we have to drink.
A woman walks there
as the land bakes.
Her skin is black
her Iro and Gele are deep red,
the water jug, held with one hand
upon its rim, atop her head.
She sways along the path,
moving to the heat waves.
In her vessel is the water
for her children,
from the well five miles back.
She's one of many mothers
collecting water every morning.
Autumn Leaving
The colours of the trees have changed
the landscape palette rearranged.
Rains have come in slanting bands
and winds arrive to rock the lands.
The hedgehog moves to hibernate
and birds fly south to migrate.
The orange leaves begin to curl
the winds and rain now mix and whirl.
Grass along the verge turns brown
the leaves from all the trees fall down.
The skies turn grey the air grows cold
Winter's on its way we're told.

Autumn Time
There are many colours that now appear,
once September's here.
The trees transform before our eyes,
rain marks the skies.
Bold yellows, sharp orange, deep red,
beneath the sky of lead.
Birds migrate and insects vanish,
harsh winds banish.
Days grow short the night time long,
hear the blackbirds song.
The winds are cooler the night air cold,
autumns taking hold.

Spring Time Light
At last the mornings welcome light
has drawn the darkness from the night,
and growing days give time and heat
for nature's bounty to repeat.
The trees sing out in chorus lines
words which blossoms redefine,
these garlands in the trees reveal
the land can now revive and heal.
All creatures feel the warming hand
of sun beams scattered on the land
as battered grass begins to grow,
released once more the rivers flow.

Spring is Emerging
by Samantha Saunders
I look around
and what do I see
spring is coming,
setting nature free,
because the trees are changing
the leaves are emerging
the animals are playing and
the skies are now blue.
The flowers are smiling
the bushes are green
the birds in the sky
in flocks are now seen.
The berries are orange
the blossom is cream
the world has unfurled
to reveal a dream
of new life and hope
of the coming heat
the smells on the air
are alluringly sweat.
Once Again
A change has crept upon the land
the warming touch of nature’s hand,
the bleakness slowly ebbs away
and spring time lengthens out the day.
While early flower heads emerge
and green and blossom white diverge,
the hedgerows slowly come alive
and woodlands once again soon thrive.
The skies now team with insect life
their hazy clouds becoming rife,
and as the days grow warmer still
the thought of summer breeds goodwill

Horse Rhyme
I do this deed
with lightening speed
for I have freed
a wondrous steed
of noble breed
so I can lead
his healthy creed
down there to feed.
I was not told
that too behold
something this bold
will take a hold
and then unfold
an equine gold.

A Frog in his Tea
The frog was tired of sitting still
so it jumped from the lawn
to the window sill,
and hopped through the gap
down onto the rug,
then up on the arm and into the mug.

The man looked down to his cup of tea
and saw something swimming
that couldn't get free.
He lifted it carefully and there in his
drink were two blinking eyes
looking up in surprise.

Both being shocked to meet over tea
the frog and the man
swopped smiles of glee.
Lifting him on to his palm he said
"Now that's what I call a mug shot
thank goodness my tea was not.

Hop Not Jump
I am a frog who likes to hop,
I hop and hop and cannot stop!
My mother said "Why not just jump,
frogs jump not hop you silly lump!"
I had no choice so told my mother
"One leg is longer than the other,
so when I go to jump like this,
my shorter leg will always miss
and so I hop but do not mind
for hopping is great fun I find!"

Curlew Hunting Worms
He raised his stick leg,
flapped the foot and froze,
below the mud flat washed with surf,
a tide of white sea,
revealing textured sludge,
a slight movement,
then jab and jab and jab again,
he thrust that long and
slender bill, a bow like beak,
a curving weapon and
mud and slim and worm emerge
to slither down that hollow tool.

White Bars
The Hawk's curved dagger
came down against
the lines of wind,
two white bars
upon his wings,
shafts of light on metal.
It cut behind a tree,
diving from sight.
The tree was a great white
husk, the slabs of bark
dried in the sun,
twisted shapes the size
of shields folding free.
Beneath a white bleached
leg bone, a tree trunk,
pocked with twig knots,
thrusting its snake limbs
wide and into the blue.
Then up above the shadow
arced away, escaping
the tree, the bow, an arrow,
the shadow Hawk
loosed into the blazing sun.
